Government of Karnataka Announces Free Bus Travel for Women
In a significant move, the Karnataka state government has declared free bus travel for women in all government-run buses, effective from June 1. This decision comes as a welcome relief to the approximately 40 lakh women who rely on buses for their daily commute across the state.
On May 30, the Transport Minister, Ramalinga Reddy, held a meeting with officials from four State-run road transport corporations, namely Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC).
During the meeting, Minister Reddy expressed, “I want to make it clear that all women can travel for free in government buses.” He further revealed that the transport department’s principal secretary would submit the scheme’s details to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for review.
The decision to implement free bus travel for women was influenced by the persistent advocacy of Greenpeace India, an environmental group. They addressed a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging the government to improve accessibility, safety, and efficiency of bus travel for women passengers. Among their recommendations were increasing the number of BMTC buses to 14,000 and establishing 11 bus lanes in Bengaluru.
Regarding the specifics of the scheme, Minister Reddy stated, “The report will provide comprehensive information, including the estimated number of women who will benefit, terms and conditions, the financial impact on the state treasury, and the financial status of the four transport corporations.”
The introduction of free bus travel for women in Karnataka is a noteworthy step towards enhancing mobility and inclusivity. This initiative is poised to empower women by providing them with affordable and convenient transportation options, thereby fostering their participation in various aspects of society.
